SecureRF, a leading provider of security solutions for the Internet of Things, announces their participation in an innovative research program for math Ph.D. candidates with the University at Buffalo. This collaboration is supported by a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and will provide the candidates with an opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world applications including the security industry. Starting in the Fall of 2016, select students will begin a yearlong training program culminating in a summer internship at SecureRF’s offices. They will participate in research and the further development of SecureRF’s Algebraic Eraser, the world’s first linear-in-time Public Key security solution.
The NSF grant supports a new initiative called the Experiential Diversity in Graduate Education (EDGE@UB) led by mathematics professor and director of graduate studies William Menasco, and David Hemmer, chair of the Department of Mathematics in UB’s College of Arts and Sciences.
Today’s mathematicians have career options beyond just academia, says Menasco. This program helps us prepare our students by building up our department’s institutional knowledge of what problems industry is facing. Hemmer commented, Students will benefit by getting the chance to work on real industry problems.
Before starting their onsite work, the interns are required to study the mathematical foundations of the Algebraic Eraser protocol as well as several other cryptographic methods now under development by SecureRF for the Internet of Things. The Algebraic Eraser is implemented in low-resource devices, including 8-bit and 16-bit processors and sensors, addressing authentication and data protection. The interns will provide development support and testing on roots-of-trust methods for secure boot and secure load operations.
